Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between locus of control and achieve- ment, and the relationship of locus control and attrition with adult students in an upgrading program. The subjects were acquired form the Alberta Vocational Centre, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Rotter's I-E Scale was administered to 86 students. After five months, no significant difference was found between internal and external students in age, intelligence, last grade completed or achievement. A significant difference was found between the internal and external groups in attrition with the internalindividualsdemonstrating a greater degree of persistence in the program. Implications of the results and suggestions for further research were discussed.
